How to create light graffiti with a phone camera?

What is light graffiti? Light graffiti or light painting is a photography technique which involves taking long exposure photograph of a moving source of light. This source can be a torch or a glowstick. The artist "paints" in the air and the end result can be enchanting. Below are some examples of the same.

Prerequisites: A camera with manual shutterspeed/exposure settings. A light source(e.g Torch), Lots of free time.

Setup: If possible get a Tripod for this experiment. The camera needs to be really stable. Also Choose a dark area for doing this. For this test we are going to use our Nokia Lumia 920 Camera smartphone. GeekTip: You don't need a DSLR to be a good photographer.

Set your camera for a long exposure shot, nokia allows us to set it at 4 seconds, which is fine for small paintings.Exposure is basically the duration for which the shutter will be open.
Select a low ISO setting, we will go for 100. That's about it.

Execution: Click the photo. The shutter will stay open for 4 seconds. In those 4 seconds draw patters with the light.

Results: Here are some of the quick clicks that we got out of the Lumia 920. You will keep improving with time. Light graffiti requires a lot of practice. Also results can be much better with a proper camera, we used a phone to show that it can be done without one too. Happy clicking .
