Google's research department just released a fun visualization called Music Timeline, which attempts to chart the rise and fall of different musical genres in terms of their relative popularity. Watch rock, pop, alternative, and hip hop each rise to the top
This visualization shows which albums from past eras are still in our music libraries today.
Dig deeper into the chart to highlight key artists in each genre and read their stories, and navigate to Google Play to hear their music. For example, by clicking on the Metal stripe, we can see the handoff from Classic Metal to Hair Metalto Alt Metal within the growth of the overall genre, as well as some of the most popular artists that composed each subgenre.
Not only can you look at which albums from past eras are still in people’s music libraries today, but you can highlight key artists in each genre and read their stories, and of course navigate to Google Play and hear their music. You can also take a closer look at changes in the vocabulary used to name artists and their work, or search for a particular artist to see if they went multi-platinum or were just a one-hit wonder.
Google says the project is just the first of many with its music discovery group. It joins similar visual examinations, such as one that tracks denial-of-service attacks, another that shows visitors on YouTube, as well as one identifying social sharing on Google+. Many of those are still kept up to date; Google says it plans to keep this particular project updated every week.
