Microsoft's Cloud storage solution "Skydrive" might not be around for long. Wait don't start taking backups yet. Microsoft is just renaming Skydrive to Onedrive.
Why would micrsoft rename a well established platform? Well, Microsoft's use of the SkyDrive name was infringing on a trademark owned by British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) Group's Sky trademark.
This move comes after a ruling by a british court. Instead of taking the fight further, microsoft has chosen to drop the skydrive name. According to Microsoft's General Manager for Consumer Apps and Services Ryan Gavin, this move is not only due to the court ruling, but also might come as a re-branding for the cloud platform.
Microsoft's windows is now on various platforms ranging from Desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones. The Onedrive name will be more appropriate signifying one storage solution for multiple devices.
"Why OneDrive?" Gavin asked. His answer: "We know that increasingly you will have many devices in your life, but you really want only one place for your most important stuff. One place for all of your photos and videos. One place for all of your documents. One place that is seamlessly connected across all the devices you use. You want OneDrive for everything in your life."
Microsoft will make a formal announcement in the coming weeks.
